Parents- Do you worry about the "summer slide" for your kids? Teachers- Do you worry about the "summer slide" for your students?
The minute school is out, do your kids balk at reading and writing! Is that summer extra credit packet, collecting dust somewhere? I have good news for you! Exercising that brain, doesn't have to be all torture! Here are 5 ideas to keep your kids flexing their academic muscles over the summer without all of the dramatic whining.
Encourage them to read----anything! Magazines, comic books, the back of a cereal box, baseball cards, non fiction, joke books... Check out your local library website and see if you get ebooks for free.
Listen! Audiobooks are great for building comprehension and a love of reading. And yes! they count towards reading. Use those free public library resources or grab a subscription to audible which is very reasonably priced.
Go game crazy! These games are awesome, for sight words, spelling and phonics development. Most important they are fun!
Listen to a kid-friendly podcast! We love "What if World"!
Do a book walk! Get some exercise, nature and reading in at the same time. Look for ones local to you. There are many in community parks and the grounds of libraries. Each page of the storybook is displayed separately along a trail, when my son was little this was a huge motivator to get him to read to us, he would run through the trail excited to see what happens next!
