Unloading Mom Guilt, One "Sign" From The Universe at a Time
The one where I finally asked myself an important question
I was feeling a little left out this morning as the skiers rushed around to get all of their gear in the car and the non-skier, me, rushed around to get ready to drop them off. I wondered for likely the hundredth time, whether I should have tried to learn how to ski when my husband taught our pre-schoolers.
I didn't grow up in a #skiingfamily . In contrast, my husband who hadn't skied in at least a decade, and was able to throw on some rental skiis, rely on his muscle memory and ski well enough to teach our oldest then 5 how to ski. He later taught our second child and even got our 3rd out on skis before he turned 3.
I did try skiing once in high school. But it hurt to fall, legs all twisted attached to big boards slamming my whole body on frozen ground. I was not a fan.
As I got older and really "leaned in" to my accident-prone, uncoordinated body my husband and I agreed that putting me on an icy hill with less control than usual of my legs was likely not smart. I broke my foot about six years ago by twisting my ankle while walking and more recently I broke my ankle and tore a tendon and still don't know how...the data speaks for itself.
As I pulled up to the front of the ski lodge to drop off my crew, I saw a sign, perhaps a divine sign from the universe. Ok, it was just a parking lot sign, but the message was clear. "Loading and UNLOADING only!" So, I complied. I unloaded my guilt at not joining in on my family's winter hobby. I also ignored the eye rolling of my teenager when I begged her to take that goofy pic of me and the sign I wrote of. Lastly, I unloaded my family.
I sat there for a moment. Then I asked myself a question I hadn't asked in too many years to count. "What did I WANT to DO today?"
